What is A2 Level?

A2 level is the second out of the six levels of language proficiency in a European language, as framed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages(CEFR). A2 is the elementary level of language proficiency indicating the learner:

  • Can understand sentences and commonly used expressions associated with topics directly related to his/her direct circumstances (e.g. personal information or information about his/her family, shopping, work, immediate surroundings).
  • Can make him/her self understood in simple, routine situations dealing with a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and common topics.
  • Can describe his/her background and education, immediate surroundings and other things associated with immediate needs in a simple way.

What is the A2 Level Test Like?

There are two portions of the A2 exam:

  1. Written examination held in groups (65 minutes)
    (Listening, Reading & Writing)

    • You will listen to short everyday conversations, personal phone messages or public announcements over a loudspeaker and do realistic exercises on them.
    • You will read texts such as brief notes, classified advertisements, signposts or posters and do exercises on them.
    • You will write a short personal text message and letter about an everyday situation.
  2. Oral examination held in a group (15 minutes)
    • You introduce yourself to the examiner and examination partner. A relaxed question-and-answer session will follow and you will hold a conversation with your partner and present a short topic.

How Do I Study for the Test?

To reach the A2 level without any prior German knowledge, we suggest you plan for at least 60 hours of studying. That may sounds like a lot, but it’s actually only about 1-1.5 months of self-studying for an entirely new language.

A good, affordable place to start is right off the Study Feeds website. We offer free practice materials to get you set for the level you are testing for.

When Do I Take the Test?

Once you feel that you meet the language requirements, you can enroll for an exam at any time. You can find all of the testing centers directly on the Goethe Institute’s website. Also, it is conducted quarterly in Delhi. Therefore, you can visit your nearest examination centre and update yourself. To know about your nearest language examination testing centre, you can check the website of the respective institution conducting the examination. In India, German language examinations are conducted by Goethe and TestDaF.
